About Me: Bridging the Digital Gap
My name is Kayla Bentas, and I am a technology enthusiast, a self-taught web developer, and an accessibility advocate. But more importantly, I am a problem solver who understands exactly what it means to navigate the digital world without sight.
My Journey
At the age of nine, my life changed when a Craniopharyngioma—a benign brain tumor crushing my optic nerve—required surgery that resulted in the loss of my sight and sense of smell.
Facing a new reality, I decided to adapt quickly. While it typically takes adults or children over a year to master Braille, I learned it in just four months. That same drive to reclaim my independence sparked a lifelong passion for technology. I realized early on that with the right tools and setup, technology is the great equalizer.
Why I Started This Business
Navigating the web as a blind individual is often a frustrating experience. I encounter websites every day with unlabeled buttons, cluttered layouts, and images missing Alt text—making them impossible to read with a screen reader.
I started this business to change that.
I combine my technical skills with my lived experience to help:
- Businesses create truly inclusive websites that welcome the visually impaired community.
- Individuals (sighted or blind) master their devices, set up their smart homes, and troubleshoot their tech headaches.
My Technical Expertise
I don’t just talk about tech; I build it, fix it, and live with it. I have spent years teaching myself how to build websites (with the support of friends at BITS) and mastering computer maintenance.
Assistive Technology
- Daily Drivers: I am an expert user of JAWS and Narrator for Windows, and fully fluent in VoiceOver for Mac and iPhone.
- Expanding Skills: I am currently integrating NVDA into my workflow to ensure comprehensive testing across all major screen readers.
- Hardware: Experienced with Braille displays and note-takers.
Smart Home & Networking I believe a smart home is an accessible home. I have personally configured my own home network and automation ecosystem, including:
- Network: Arris Surfboard modems and Eero Mesh Wi-Fi systems.
- Automation: Full Amazon Alexa integration (Echo Pop, Dot, and Show 8).
- Security: Ring Pro video doorbells and keyless smart lock installation and setup.
Computer Repair & Support
- Factory resetting and restoring Windows PCs.
- Installing, uninstalling, and updating complex software.
- General maintenance to keep laptops and desktops running fast and cool.
